For those of us who have larger families than normal, the flight can be added quickly - minimize the number of trips a family can take each year. We usually choose to travel by car, although it takes a few days to reach our destination. The price is right especially when we camp along the way, and it allows us to take more holidays each year with our children. Some parents worry about entertaining the children during the long 10 hours of the car. Success is dependent on having a plan.
First, you must organize your car so that you can bring all the necessities and then add your educational items. Car clutter is the enemy and will quickly make your journey to an energy-saving character where you will dream of being home again. Invest in a rooftop cabin like a Thule to store travel effects that you do not need direct access. If your budget allows you also buy a second cargo storage space to store even more items that would otherwise take up valuable space inside your vehicle.
You will find that there is now much more space inside your vehicle. Use it wisely by utilizing some good car operators on the market. There are things that organize your DVDs, childrens car organizers, backpackers who are isolated and keep snacks, travel pockets with pockets holding art accessories, toys and more snacks, floor racks, dump bags, 12V vacuum cleaners and more. We always take advantage of organizing and consolidating our items in the car so that everyone has access to what they need when we are on their way for days to time.
Begin packing your entertainment and educational items for the kids. Our children love to read, but reading during the trip can cause movement sickness, so we discovered audio books on CD. The selection is endless from fun classics to educational audiobooks. We found that when we travel to a specific destination like following the Oregon Trail, it is good to bring a few movies and audio books on the subject. The kids learn while you have fun. CDs and DVDs do not take up much space when you store them in a CD-visor organizer and provide hours and even daytime entertainment.
The children always want to do arts and crafts, so be sure to bring some color packages and a suitcase that you can use while creating their backing. I do not usually recommend a card card, but we picked up some interesting wildlife cards while driving through Wyoming that the kids still love to play with. They ask each other for the names of each animal and have even created their own, go fish type card game for predators and swapping cards. Its amazing what the kids can bring on their own!
For the older children, each one brings a journal and or sketch book to document their experience. In fact, we have developed a collection of scientific tests so my son could collect dirt tests from every state we drove through. The colors ranged from deep black soils to light red dirt in Utah and he now has an inherent interest in geology from the only road trip.
For the young children it is always good to bring a favorite or familiar toy together especially for the long journeys. If there is any fear of losing the toy along your journey, carry a backup identical toy to completely eliminate a potentially traumatic experience for your youngster.
Once you have packed up your entertainment and educational items, put together your car menu and cooking system. Because our children have serious food allergies and can not take the chance to eat, we carry all our food with us. I have organized a food storage system and use some good cooking organizer bags to achieve success in this area. We always take our home-made car foods like organic fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade granola, sandwiches, nitrate free jerky, homemade track mix and snacks. I also take main course meals when I can cook in our hotel room or at the campsite. Just like everything in life, the exercise is perfect and every time we travel, I find new ways to cook and add new entrees to our travel meals.
Now youre ready to get out and see the world, or at least North America on your road trip with the kids. With maps, audio books, magazines, color packages, toys and more, you will be equipped for a successful car school with your family. Not only will you enjoy being anywhere else than home, but you will be able to teach your children in a fun and exciting way about other states, wildlife, agriculture and much more.
